Obama makes it harder for firms with labor violations to get U.S. pacts - LA Times


President Obama, federal contracts, labor laws, Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order Although there are only 24,000 businesses (employing 28 million workers) with government contracts affected by the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order, still a step in the right direction. Two important excerpts: "The new process is designed to encourage companies to settle existing disputes with workers by paying back wages and making other amends. The order also requires that workers get information each pay period that helps them verify the accuracy of their paychecks." "Obama is underscoring the idea that, "if you are breaking the law, you don't get to do business with the biggest employer in the country," said Joseph Geevarghese, deputy director of the Change to Win labor federation."

Truck accidents surge: Why no national outcry?


Fatal truck accidents happen nearly 11 times a day in the U.S. CNBC looks at the causes, who's to blame, and why it gets little attention.
